"Your lucky you found me when you did..." The man replied as he moved his hand over thefire as it danced between his fingertips. His glasses reflecting the flameas his eyes mimicked its color. He shook it off as he turned toward the person next to him and tipped his wide brim hat. "This thing should not be in the hands of anything. Not a living person, a dead being, any creature... It does not belong in this land... Not even this planet." He replied as he sat back and looked up at the stars.

"It is a miracle you found me before it could have done anything else." He replied as he pushed what appeared to be a large book towards the other. The book opened a large eye which stared at the two. It moved rapidly as if taking every detail.

Huluhot pressed his hand over the eye and it shut immediately. He cringed as he pulled his hand away from it and looked at Shiruba. "As I have alreadysaid...Thisthing is dangerous...We cannot destroy it with the power we have and the only way I know of is too do what the book says... Sacrifice to gain power but if you sacrifice too much you may turn into a monsterwhich may slaughter us all." Huluhot moved away from the book. "I cannot have such a thing in my possession... It has already taken a toll on me... As a person of high power... Who knows what it could have done to me." Huluhot replied and looked again at the fire.

"You must take it. I will help any way I can and we will moveto thenexttown in themorning. If the League and Core nations aren't readying for war we should have no troubles but we must talk to someone with more knowledge of these things. I have no idea if my mind was tainted by it. I know of an Alundra named Elia that could help us there." Huluhot began to kill the fire with stones that seemed to absorb the heat. He waited until the stones turned red and the fire dissipated before picking them back up and sliding them in his pockets. "Better get some rest... We have been through a lot. Won't help if we aren't strong to deal with whats to come." Huluhot moved over to his makeshift bed.

Shiruba had just nodded. He made sure the book was within his sight. He had seen Huluhot's eyes change. He feared the worst but understood it had been done. Hopefully Huluhot could continue to remain an ally but as it grew darker he began to think otherwise.

"That's what I'm telling you," the man said urgently into the phone, "this book... this thing I found. It has an eye! No, not like the letter 'I', a moving eye like you or me... No I don't know what to do with it... that's why I called!" He was getting more frustrated by the second, "Fine, just come over in an hour will you... Yes, my wife made her cookies... No you can't flirt with her. Would you be serious for one second!" Something tugged on his shirt sleeve, his 10 year old son was rubbing his eyes and yawning. The man pulls the phone away from his mouth, "What is it Jay?"

"You promised you'd tell me a story."

"And I will," he reassured, "I just need to do this first." The boy pouted and wandered away from his father, his eyes spot a book laying innocently on the dinning room table, he clambered onto the nearest chair and reached out for it. The book felt small hands grabbing at his bindings, it peeked it's eye open just a hairs length to see a rosy cheeked brunette boy in footy PJs. The boy had never been one for reading, too many words for his liking, but a story was a story, maybe it have superheroes or something. He bit his lip in excitement, cracking open a page.

Innocent eyes viewed its pages in confusion, letting out a disgruntled sigh to find no story of any interest. It was just another wordy book. Ugh. Those were the worst! The book found the boy's innocence and curiosity intriguing. "Hey, how about that story now?" The boy looked up, his eyes sparkling with happiness, he jumped off his chair into his father's awaiting arms, leaving the book alone and cold.

It didn't like that feeling.

The boy drifted off into his dreams of daring heroes, benevolent kings, wicked warlocks, fearless knights, dangerous dragons, and pretty pretty princess... though... no princess were only pretty in the stories. Girls he could do without. (Except his best friend, but she acted more like a boy then he did, so that didn't count). He began tossing and turning, his sheets confining him too much, darker images began to play in his mind. They were full of blood, killing, power. He didn't like these images, people dropping like flies, puppies dying in the streets, fire crackling everywhere, it scared him. He didn't like these dreams at all. But for some reason he couldn't find a way to get out of his slumber.

--

"Do you know what it could be," the man asked as his friend lifted up the cover, munching on the man's wife's homemade chocolate chip cookies.

"Well," he started, spraying cookies crumbs from his mouth much to the man's and the book's displeasure, "there's one idea I have, read some legend about an eye book. Don't remember much but, it's something like grants you power. Something else too... can't remember though."

"How can we tell?"

"You could test it?"

"How?"

"Ask for something." the friend said with a shrug. The man raised an apprehensive eyebrow.

"Why don't you try?"

"S'not my book?"

"Fine." The man looked down at the book on his dining room table, its eye now wide open staring at the man. "Book..." the book stared, "I want... um..." he looked to his friend for help, the friend did a motion of 'money' sign with his fingers. "Um... a 100 dollars!" His friend looked incredulously at him.

"Why not make it a million dollarsss," a icy voice slithered out of the book. The man jumped, "or even all the money in the world."

"It spoke!" He exclaimed, the friend looked confused.

"I didn't hear anything."

"How could you-"

"Because he did not asssk for anything." The voice again spoke, but only the man seemed to have heard it. "What price will you pay for your requessst?" The man did not seem to acknowledge this statement.

"Are you saying you could grant me this... anything I ask for?" His friend looked very confused.

"I'm not saying that-" his friend started.

"Yesss, if that ssshould be your desssire." The man looked around at the disarray of his home with the textbook under the table leg and the wall paper tearing.

"Then yes! Grant it!"

--

The man's wife slept soundly, her head nestled in the pillow. Suddenly a burst of pain hit her like a bullet, she went icy cold as her heart stop beating.

--

The man found three things that morning, one his son crying because mommy wouldn't wake up, two that his beloved wife had left this world (he despaired and blamed himself for not considering the book's warning), and the three that when he entered his garage, large stacks of money, gold and silver were piled high. His friend gave him a broad grin. "I don't know how you did it. But we're fucking billionaires!"

--

The man, like all men, liked this power he received from the book, he moved out of his old house leaving with it the memories of his wife. His son looked in wonder at the lavish home that his father had surprised him with. "I can get you anything you want, anything at all Jay."

"I want mommy."

"Mommy isn't coming back." He'd asked the book this time and time again the answer is always the same.

"There are no refundssss in the game of life."

"We'll get you a new mommy."

Jay never liked the new mommies.

--

Jay is 16 now, his father is the richest man in the world and he knows it. He leads a group called the League, Jay supposes it's supposed to sound heroic, if the League actually did any good rather than enforce harsh laws and commit horrid crimes that had no punishments. Jay is asked the same question every year, "What do you want Jay?" He almost always tempted to say something different, but he doesn't.

"I want Mom back." He is slapped.

"She isn't coming back boy."

He didn't go to school, home schooled by the top elites of the world, Jay still hated reading. And though having money was a great delight for Jay for a little while, the corruption was plain to see. When your father is filthy rich, being filthy rich is the only way to win his favor.

Jay is still constantly plagued by nightmares of the worst sort, and his kingdom spans to only his backyard (massive backyard, but still). Jay hoped one day to fly far away, to a place where no one could ever find him, and he could be himself.

The book, the one Jay had cracked open all those years ago, was locked tight from prying eyes. Only his father and his friend had access.

Not to say Jay had never tried to see the book, away tempted to go and see it again. Like it called out to him.

--

"It'sss time for another payment." The voice edicts to the man in his head.

"And what is it this time?" the man asked jokingly. "A plague across a town. A limb from a colonel."

The book smirked silently, "Your sssson."

The man is taken aback, "My son? What could you want with him, I refuse to let you kill him." He ordered like he had the authority to.

"Bring the boy to me. No harm will come of him."

"And if I refuse?"

"It ssshall be your death I sseeek."

--

Jay is never brought to the book, nor the other way around. The book is stolen in the dead of night by a bespectacled man. And Jay finally flies away, running through cobbled stones streets a bag slung over his shoulder and frantic eyes searching for a hide away.

The book thunders in the man's head when both his possessions go missing, rage consumed the man. "Find my son," he orders. He donned a black cloak, he would search for the book himself.

"You have 1 month to collect me and sssshow me to the boy." The book spoke. "Or you sssshall be the next dead body."

Shiruba began to hack away at the book. Trying to grind his knife into it as deeply as possible but it seemed to just slide the weapon away. As he lay there he looked at Huluhot. Something was wrong with his eyes when they met. They hadn't appeared normal as they once had been and with Huluhot disobeying what the group had asked it was beginning to bother him if he could be trusted.

Shiruba decided to open the book.

He was surprised by what he saw. All the pages appeared blank. He skimmed through the book and found no images or texts. As he finally neared the end of the book he stopped. A large hatchet dropped from the book and revealed one page. It revealed instructions on cutting one's arm off to gain the power to control bones in the forearm. Shiruba glazed over the texts and grabbed the hatchet. It felt very real but as he though about using it against the book it began to disintegrate within his hand and the texts began to disappear.

"What the hell is this still?" He replied as he closed the book and faced it down so the eye could not see. He began making plans on dropping the item in the middle of the ocean or in a volcano before Huluhot began to stir.

Jay gasped for air, ducking behind a wall as soldiers marched past. His breath came out in quick frightened gasps, he squeezed his eyes shut tights. His manicured fingernails clawing into the ground in fear. The footsteps faded and Jay took in a deep breath. He rose from his crouch position and shifted his bag in front of him. He grabbed his bottled water, gulping down some of the crisp clean liquid. He closed the top and began slinking through the town. The air was chilled, wind brushing through his brunette locks. The sun began turning a deep orange melting into the sky. Dusk soon approached. Jay nerves became more and more unhinged.

Harsh laughter came in behind him, soldiers, or off-work soldiers were swinging their arm around, bottles of liquor clenched tight in their hands. Their drunken eyes catch sight of Jay, seeing his shoulder length hair and fair complexion as female traits. They slur out sexual words, chasing after the boy. He hastened his steps fear clenching tight at him. "Girly what you doing out so late?" One of them calls.

Jay was about to defend that he is not a girl, when a hardened grip grabbed hold of his arm and flung him against the brick wall. Hot, disgusting breath crept into Jay's nostril, he gagged as clammy iron hands keep him trapped. "Well girly?"

"I'm not a girl!" His body was pressed harder against the wall, his head knocking with a loud crack, he saw stars.

"Sure is pretty though, ain't cha? Like a girl, don't ya think fellas?" the other drunken men nod in a agreement, their pupils large and black.

Jay is quivering and defenseless. He can't even imagine the horrors that could happen to him. Something caught his eye, a shadowed figure coming from behind a corner, slinking as it should be done. His eyes shift back to the drunken man keeping him prisoner. The man kept talking, his horrid breath stinking up the fresh air Jay was trying to inhale. A grunt and a thump made him turn, his two drunken companions were bleeding from their necks and dead on the floor. A bloodied weapon was leveled at his face, he turned white.

"Scurry along if you don't want to end up like those two." A blue cloaked voice ordered. The man nodded, and ran for his life. The cloaked person laughed, and with a flick of their wrist a dagger goes straight into the running man's back. He collapsed. "And he actually thought I'd let him live."

Jay's eyes were wide as saucers. The cloaked figure turned to face the brunette boy. And hugged him. "Jay! I can't believe it's you!" Jay blinked, the voice finally clicking.

"C-Carol?" The figure smiled, pushing her hood off to show her river like black hair, unchanging chocolate eyes and happy smile.

"Long time no see, eh?"

A man continued to aim at the two from his barrel of his gun. Headphones hanging from his ears as he pulled his weapon down. "For hell's sake... You almost got me killed y'know!" The person wasn't much older than either of them and jumped back down into the alley. He scrounged up some bags he had left filled with supplies and food. He put a knife in his mouth as he began to climb back into the window sill he came from.

He slipped and crashed into a pile of rubbish.

"I have to steal lighter things." He grumbled as he kept his distance from the two and just threw the back into the window. "Your lucky your friend here saved you. I only had enough bullets for half those guys and I probably wouldn't have saved you. Not worth the risk of losing bullets. You two should better go. The league ain't stupid. It will realize this people are dead and patrol this area tightly. Makes my job harder to get things out of here now."

The boy replaced his earphones in the correct positions and tidied his uniform. His brown hair untidy and his green eyes warm. He seemed like a normal high schooler except for the fact he carried a shotgun by his side. "As I said. Get out of here. Before I shoot you for suspecting you are the R.R. or something."

Carol rolled her eyes, taking Jay by the hand and leading him out of the alley. "Come on Jay Bird. You look a little lost." Jay blushed crimson. Carol walked past the motionless soldier and with a swift hand pulled the dagger out of the man's back. She eyed the weapon, before tucking it into her belt.

"Haven't heard that in forever." Jay said hesitantly. Carol laughed.

"It might've been 6 years, but I haven't forgotten your nickname." Carol turned to the other male, hands on her hips. "As for you, stay away from me and my boys' territory, or the next knife is in you." She raised an eyebrow, just begging him to try and come at her. "Don't follow me." She told the school boy.

"Carol... should you really be saying that-" She grabbed his hand again, pulling him down the street, pulling him down as soldiers passed. A worn building with barred windows, weather roughed walls and chipped paint stood in front of them. Carol walked to the back entrance. Knocking in 4's three times, a male voice came in through the door.

"Who is it?"

"You know who it is bastard." Jay's eyes widened at Carol's language, it was almost as bad as his father's friend.

"What was that? Think I need a password." A slot in the door opened and a pair of green eyes stared at the two, "Bringing home strays again Car?"

Carol frowned, "This happens to be an important stray." She reasoned.

"Still gonna need that password with that."

Carol growled, the slot shut tight, "Open up you fucking bastard," she yelled banging on the door, "Or so help me I will burn all of your hockey memorabilia."

"Just open the door," another voice yelled, highly annoyed, from inside.

"Fine. Don't you dare touch my stuff Carol!" Several locks click and the door swung open. A blond, bushy eyebrowed teen stood in front of them, a gun in hand. Jay stiffened instantly. Maybe this wasn't such a good idea...

"Come on, Jay. How about a nice bed to sleep on. Some lukewarm food. Talk about old times." Carol's bright smile was back as she offered a hand to lead the boy inside.

"For the record Carol, the password is 'Carol can't sing.'" The other voice said.

"I hate that password." Carol pouted as the blond shut and locked the door. "And I can SO sing. See ohooohhh." The blond covered the girl's mouth.

"Much better." He said.

Jay couldn't help but smile at these strange new friend he'd made.

"I think I agree with your friends password." The boy walked behind the pair and poked Carol with his gun. "You told me not to come you should have realized I would have been curious of that statement and also of the fact you killed a bunch of soldiers in front of me." He replied as he looked around the place. "Nice place you have and I also believe you owe me for nearly getting me killed." He smiled.

"Also, before you act, I planted a set of charges. If my heart stops beating it'll go off." He replied. "Just to warn you."

"Liam!" The blond turned to face the other boy, "what happened to your fool proof locking system?"

The boy fumbled with his book, shutting it dramatically before typing on his computer. "It worked the last time I checked, that was only an hour..." He stopped and looked at the screen. "Seriously Carol! Your banging must have messed with the system. Now I have to reboot the whole thing, that's going to take... like... hours! I had a date tonight!" The blond laughed at the hilarity of the statement.

"Pfft, you a date?"

"It's true!"

Carol, still under the grasp of the blond, feeling the gun dig into her shoulder blades. She glanced at Jay who looked a mix of confused, frightened and happy all rolled in one. Carol whipped her hand to pull off the blond's hand. The blond glanced mildly at the intruder, patting Carol gently on the head. "There's no need for weapons here," He tells the stranger. "We don't intend to hurt you." Carol scoffed. The blond repeats the phrase, flicking Carol on the forehead. She lets out an ow, rubbing her forehead.

"Carol sometimes can't control herself," he explained, "and she'll go berserk over the littlest things. Don't take it personally if she put you in harms way. She doesn't think a lot."

"Hey!" She pouted, "I do too!" She lightly smacked the blond's shoulder, "You are a jerk Kenny."

"You're welcome to stay as long as you want," 'Kenny' told the other, "Just as long as you put down the gun, and take the explosives away when you leave. Places like these are hard to come by, and, from what I've heard, so is charity."

Yousuke sweat dropped and began to fumble with his outer shirt before messing with a device on his chest. He frantically pulled out a radio and began to yell into it. "Call it off! Call it off damnit!" He replied as he than focused on trying to remove the device.

"I'm not used to peaceful negotiations..." Yousuke replied. "This device actually goes off when my heart races. I just use that excuse to protect myself but now its freaking out!"

A voice replied on the radio. "What the hell you mean call it off!? I'm not getting near the damn things! I already placed them and charged them!" The voice seemed to rapidly try to think of a solution.

"You just had to bring home the strays, didn't you Carol." Liam snapped at her, shutting his laptop and sliding it in his bag. He began stuffing books upon books in the small pack. Kenny gave him a look. "What? If this place is gonna blow, I don't think we should be anywhere near it. So either calm him down or let's hightale out of here." He grabbed a duffle bag, filled with clothes, a first aid kit, and some food and water and shoved it into Jay's arms.

Carol snapped then, "You're blowing up my home! What gives you the right fucking bastard. No Kenny! Let go of me, I'm gonna kill him. Let me at him!" Kenny threw the girl over his shoulder, she kicked and screamed pounding her fists into his back. Already spotting Liam guiding the shocked Jay down several bookcases to the basement, Kenny turned, throwing a bag over his shoulder. He faced the intruder.

"Whatever it is you hoped to have accomplished by trespassing here, I hope you get it. Because you can find your own way out." Kenny took off a sprint, as he passed each bookcase he pressed a button in his pocket. The bookcases slammed together, creating a catatonic boom and blocking the only way to travel by foot. If one was to follow them, they'd do it by climbing.Carol held on tightly to him, her body jousting in his grip. She felt his grip slip for a fraction of a second, and she gave a frightened squeak. Kenny adjusted her position, carrying her bridal style.

He took the steps down to the basement by twos, and shut the door firmly with Carol's help. The two other boys shifted uncomfortably not looking at each other. Liam smirked seeing Kenny holding Carol. He sent her a kiss-y face which she firmly glowered at and flipped him off.

Jay took in a deep breath, still alarmed by all that had happened in such short time. "Um..." He started slowly. "What now?"

"Now," Kenny said dropping Carol to the ground and heaving the bag to sit better on his shoulder, "We trust that you're the Jay Carol always talked about and show you everything you need to know." He took ten paces to a soggy looking bookcase bare of any literature, pushing it to the side. He revealed a tunnel leading into darkness, a gust of cool wind blew out of it. "We will stay in the tunnels until whatever happens up there is finished."

"And after?" Jay asked.

"Either will have the home we offered you, or we're going to have to go house shopping."

"Looks like they left. We need to see if these guys are a threat to us Nanako." Yousuke replied into the radio.

"I'm researching all outside the building but nothing that reveals they are R.R. or something." The voice replied back.

"I'll get to searching. We won't have much time but glad that worked. Those explosives were just fireworks. More for show or a big bang rather than anything else." He replied looking throughout the room and inspecting as much as he could."

"I still don't get who they are. I didn't expect this." He whispered to himself.

"Why did you leave him in there!?" Carol yelled, pounding her fists into Kenny's chest. "What if he finds something?"

Liam scoffed, "What's he gonna find," he kicked a stray rock against the tunnel wall, twisting his flashlight in every direction. "We're a bunch of orphaned teens trying to survive in a distopia, it's like every bad Young Adult book combined. And unless he wants to do some heavy reading, all of the books I left are unnecessary to probably both him and myself. Everything we need is here." He patted his bag containing the few books he brought and his quite precious laptop. "'Sides what would he want with a berserk freak like you." Kenny punched him hard, Liam's face stung painfully.

Jay trailed last, not sure where he was to go or what he should do. Liam had yelled at him for being incompetent of the area. Not that Jay should know the ways of the old building. Needless to say, they had not started off fantastically.

Carol glared angrily at Liam, 'if looks could kill' Jay thought. Then turned away, rubbing her eyes. Kenny looked to the two boys, "I'll be right back." He lead Carol away from the other two boys, his arm comfortingly around her shoulder.

"You okay," Kenny whispered to the girl as they sit down against the wall. She laid her head against his shoulder.

"I really am a berserk freak..." she mumbled. "I have no soul." she said with a sob at the end. Kenny pulls her in tight.

"Car, you know how Liam is, might be a genius but sometimes he just doesn't think of others, cause if he did, he'd know that you regret it each and every time. He's scared and he takes it out on you and your friend. But you need to be strong for yourself and Jay, or Liam will eat him alive!" Carol smiled a bit.

"Come on, let's make sure not all the food is gone."

Liam pulled out the first aid kit for his duffle, taking out the supplies to dress his wound. His cheek was blackening, swollen but otherwise unharmed. "Pretty weird group you landed yourself in, huh, Jay Bird."

"How do you know my nickname," Jay asked looking at the darker haired brunet.

"Carol sleep talks." He responded with a shrug, dabbing on some medicine that made him wince.

"Come on guys! Let's eat." Carol returned with a bright smile and a happy complexion. Like what was said had disappeared from her consciousness completely.

"Looks like nothing leads them to Alias." Yousuke replied. "Am I relieved... He has most kids doing insane things for him. These kids must be new or out of reach without even a letter from him." Yousuke replied as he sat on a chair and replied to the radio. "I think I'll get out of here for now. Maybe talk to that cute girl with the powers. She must have gotten them from somewhere and if not Alias, then who?"

He began to grab his things and asked where to meet up.

They make a fire, cooking up some food, Liam had asked if Jay knew how to cook. Jay shook his head solemnly, saying he was never given an opportunity or reason to learn. Liam taught Jay how to crack an egg on the corner of the plan and place it in the sizzling pan. Jay frowned at his first attempt, getting in more shell then was wanted. But by the third attempt, it was near perfect, he grinned broadly. Liam smiled gently back, wincing at the movement of his face. Carol had already scarfed down her meal, smiling broadly and snuggling into Kenny, his arm nestling her close. Once their food had all been consumed, they gathered around the fire and warmed their hands.

"I believe introductions are in order," Kenny began. "My name is Kenneth Kite, and this is my friend Liam Lit. You already know Carol. And you're name is Jay." Jay nodded.

"You're the leader of the League's son, right?" Jay nodded again, he brought his knees up, resting his chin on them. Carol sends him a small smile.

"Carol told us you disappeared quite suddenly and she was never able to get in contact with you." Liam added. Jay shrugged.

"Yeah, sounds about right." Jay said. "I mean even with all the stuff I was given, contacting her never seemed like an option."

"Why'd you run away?" Jay looked at Carol, "If you got all this stuff."

"Was never given what I wanted, only what people thought I wanted." He grabbed a stick, poking at the fire. "Just need to get out of this city." A log collapsed, embers shooting in the air, dancing in his hazel eyes. "Can you three help me escape?"

"Do you have supplies for when you're outside?" Liam asked, "Or a person to lead you outside the perimeter?" Jay said nothing but looked down, "Thought so," He grinned, throwing his arm around the other's shoulders, "No worries Jay Bird. We'll get ya outta here. Just stick with us for a bit."

--

"What do you mean you haven't found him!" the man yelled into the phone, angrily throwing his cloak off.

"Sir, the b-boy just d-disappeared. B-but no worries. We'll redouble our e-efforts tomorrow."

"You'd better. My son is to be found immediately and under no circumstance should he be able to pass the city gates. If one more day goes by without him found. This city is going under lock and key."

He hung up before the other man could muster a response. He collapsed in a heap, heaving out a sigh. No sign of the book in where he searched, many though had caught signs of a bespectacled male running in the opposite direction of his home the night of the theft.

Radec growled. It was the day where the League and Core would continue their talks to avoid war and pursue peace but the man who owned his enemy was more worried about his so than the matters of the world. Radec continued to walk into the building with a set of guards. "Even though this was on neutral territory it would be idiotic for him not to have protection.

Radec headed toward the conference room and seated at one side of the long table. His suit filled with medals and honors while the lower portion of his face was covered by a mask that helped him breathe while the rest of his face was covered in bandages. Red glasses obstructed his face as he waited for the arrangements to proceed.

---

"I swear you guys are idiots." Replied a boy much older than the rest of them. He dragged Yousuke behind him as he looked at the group. "You know this guy was peeking into everything, right?" He asked them and was surprised to see Jay.

"You bring anything in here now don't you?" He looked at Carol and dropped Yousuke in front of him. "Might as well keep him too. Wouldn't kill you to bring more cute girls around." He teased and sat beside Jay. "My name is Ren." He smiled while holding out his arm for Jay.

"Also, Jiasca will be here down shortly." Ren replied to Carol. "I don't know where she went but she ditched me with a few guards and took my gun. Sometimes I don't even think she is on our side but if we are cooking food she is bound to come up."

Jay looked warily at the proffered hand, he felt Liam's grip on his shoulder tighten just a tad but when he looked at the other boy Liam did not look back at him. Jay looked away and shook hands with Ren a little apprehensively. "Jay." He said his long bangs falling in front of his face.

Carol fumed, only held back by a reassuring Kenny. His intertwined their hands and whispered soothing words into the girl. She scrunched up her nose and huffed, but relented. Kenny always had a way of calming her down. She still took a knife from her boots and started playing with the sharp thing. Throwing it in the air and then deftly catching it by the handle. Up and down. Up and down. Catch. Catch.

The three had mixed feelings about Ren and Jiasca. Ren had taken them in, but it was no life that they'd ever wanted. After the travesty of the Great Fire that had killed almost all of the factory working force- including their parents- they stuck together; Carol, Liam and Kenny. Kenny made sure that no one messed with or manipulated him or his friends. But people were always intrigued by Liam's genius mind and Carol's berserk ability. Kenny wasn't without his own specialties, but he had not told a soul what it was he could do. Kenny was the obvious leader of the group of three, but this was challenged daily Ren, the oldest of the group of five.

Kenny glared at Ren. Then glanced at Yousouke. "What we do is none of your business Ren." He spat. "There was nothing to find. Liam took care of everything." Liam stood and stretched his limbs.

"Well, Jay I guess this means we're making more food." Liam said. "Wanna help?" Jay nodded excitedly, and the two boys move to the duffle bag.

Carol watches Yousouke carefully. "Regret following me?" She asked with a smirk.

--

His friend began telling him the day's progression while he was absent searching for the book. He ushered the man into a conference room just waiting to be filled with idiots. The man's eyes glint spotting another person sitting in a chair towards the end of the table. His eyebrow raised questioningly. "A little early aren't you."

"Its fine." Ren replied as he looked at the fire and dropped a backpack full of weight. "Still got more supplies and scavenging what is left of the old prison. It should keep us stocked for a while but I'm not going to be a bother to you guys if you dislike everything I do. I made tough choices. I sacrificed people that I cared about and I don't even think Jiasca can look me in the face after what I did to her. You still have people, at least remember that." Ren replied as he walked away from the group and began to just think by himself.

Yousuke just watched and turned toward Carol. "Not particularly... It is much better than the outside." He replied stretching his back and ignoring Ren.

---

"I've been known to appear at unexpected times." Radec glowered. "I didn't expect a person such as you having troubles with a child and now most recently a book... It is astonishing how quickly information is gathered and spread through this modern era." He replied as he looked around the room. "We both know why we exist... We profit from war that exists in third world countries... I sell weapons to the opposition while you sell them to the policing force. While I applaud that I suggest we begin altering this exchange in a way that ensures we both gain." Radec waited for the man before him to reply.

"I have people because I put myself in front of them. They mean everything to me. And I won't put them in harms way. I don't use my friends. Maybe that's something you should learn." Kenny shot back at the lone figure of Ren.

Carol glowered at Yousouke's relaxed form, wanting nothing more than to shove her knife across his twisted little smirk. Her fists clenched and unclenched and she struggled to remain calm. Her eyes moved away from Yousouke to Jay and Liam. Jay had a look pure concentration as he followed Liam's example. A smile played across his lips as he got it in the first go. He looked up and saw Carol staring, he waved and resumed listening to Liam. Carol mused with how much things had changed since they'd last seen each other. Jay never lost his youthful glow, and though his narcissistic streak had yet to appear it wouldn't be long til it appeared. He was more timid and nervous then she was used to, but 6 years... A lot can happen in 6 years.

--

"Go on," the man said taking a seat at the head of the long table. He pulls out his phone, and idly begins searching it. "I'm listening."

The phone sizzled and fell apart within the man's hands. Radec held what appeared to be a black box filled with switches and buttons. He pointed it at the ceiling and the lights dimmed. "I don't believe you understand what the circumstances are." Radec replied as his guards exited the room.

"I know about that book and what it actually is."

---

Ren just shook his head sheepishly. "Just eat quick." He replied as Yousuke looked at Carol. "We had a girl like you in our group once. She was eaten alive by some cannibals in Artinia. It was pretty bad and she was powerful, just don't think it'll save you from everything." Yousuke stretched.

The man stood up abruptly, anger surging in him. "And what of it?" He asked, "do you expect to gain my attention such a minuet detail. Or for me to quake in fear at your knowledge." His palms rest against the table, "Impress me, what is your knowledge, what will you do with it?"

--

Carol's eyes widened, imagining what happened to the girl Yousuke spoke about. Her hands started shaking, and she wrapped her arms around her waist shutting her eyes tight. Kenny's eyes shot to Yousuke's resting form, Liam looked up from his cooking and saw Carol's shaking form. What bastard made his best friend catatonic? His eyes followed Kenny as the blond stood grasping onto the fallen knife Carol had kept to. Kenny pulled Yousuke up by his shirt, leveling the weapon in front of him. Liam walked over, informing Jay to watch the meal and don't let it burn. "What the hell did you say to her!?" the dark haired genius raged.

"If you ever talk to Carol like that again, I'll plunged this knife into your eyes." Under any other circumstance, Kenny would've been bluffing. He was not this time.

"You obviously don't know that more of those items exist." Radec replied and revealed a booklet. He flipped through numerous pages and found the right page before marking it and tossing it towards the man in front of him.

"You obviously think the book of greed was the only thing in existence. There are other books just as dangerous but this one in particular also has a cousin. The two books are almost identical but I think it follows a very different form of greed." Radec replied.

---

"Do it... You obviously haven't survived out there long enough... Hadn't have to murder your own... Looks like that guy knows more about the outside than you do." Yousuke referred to Ren. "You act so high and mighty but killing me would bring you to where reality really is. I told her the truth. I can lie and say she will live forever without pain but let me ask you if you could do that. You haven't been in the borderlands! You haven't seen what I seen! You haven't experienced close to what I saw! Do it!" Yousuke yelled at Kenny.

"That girl... We found her. She was running away and during this time we had enough food and water to spare. We thought she could help and after she showed us her powers we thought things would finally get better. She helped us a lot no joke but we began to rely on her too much. I didn't like it and made sure she didn't take things alone like the group wanted. They thought I just wanted some thrills but after we messed up and accidentally revealed ourselves when we tried to get water. We depended on her and she couldn't save everyone. She tried and even with the cost of her life only a couple of us made out of it alive." Yousuke tore part of his shirt and revealed his collarbone. It seemed to have been ripped off before and showed a large scar. "Those people were that desperate to eat us. That is how bad it is out there."

The man's interest was peaked, he viewed the page in the dim light, "Interesting. And what sort of form would that be?" He asked eyes still glued to the page staring longingly at his prized possession.

--

Jay eyed the fight warily, he watched the cooking dish for a little longer but grew bored. 'A watched pot never boils,' his mom had always said. That applied to pans too, right? Jay shrugged and slid over to Carol's shaking form. He wrapped an arm around her body, she nestled in his chest. He looked down at her and his eyes widened. Instead of the 16 year old girl he'd seen just 10 minutes ago. He saw a young girl in baggy clothing around 10 years old. She looked up at him with sad watery eyes. She was the Carol of his past. She murmured something into his chest, her small hands grasping hold of his shirt. He didn't know what else to do but hold her tight as she recovered from her nightmarish images.

Liam sent a sidelong glance at the two, and did a double take. Stepping away from the fight he hurried towards the other two. "Come on guys, the fort's all better now that the crazies are gone. Let's get Carol to bed."

"Wait, you can see her like this?" Jay asked astounded.

"We'll talk about it later, Jay Bird."

"Hey," Carol mumbled, "that's my name for Jay. You stole it!" Liam hushed her.

"Come on, little Car, off to bed."

"But I don't want to! What if the nightmares get me." Tears welled up in the young girl's face.

They walk back to empty bookcase, they spot no one trailing after them. "Will you tell me why Carol is ten again?!"

"Not now." Liam insisted. "Come on Carol. Long day today. Jay Bird can tell you a story." Jay looked aghast, shaking his head, Liam gives him a fierce glare.

"Y-yeah. Sure thing." Jay laughed hesitantly.

Quietly, Liam whispered, "This is a part of her berserk ability, reverting back to a time of innocence."

Kenny released Yousuke, he tucked the knife in his belt. He laughed, "See that's the difference between you and me. Like I already said to Ren. We're a team, we rely on each other. Carol and Liam need me just as much as I need them. We complete each other. Call me philosophical, naive or whatever. That doesn't stop it from being the truth. Maybe I will see what's out there," he shrugged, "Maybe I won't. Being with them, and keeping them safe that's all that's matter to me. And you've got another thing coming if you think I'm going to let you fuck with that."

"Well there seems to be a book of each sin... But what I find most interesting is the items attached to these books. I've realized that your book is beginning to destroy you. Without the key it will continue to do so until you cease to exist." Radec replied. "This is all a ruse and it is controlled by that book but as I said there are items connected to each book. The items are like keys... I have yet to find out what they accomplish but it shouldn't be worse than what the books can create."

Radec tossed a small notebook. It looked ragged and old. It barely moved as it sat on the desk. "That is the book of pestilence." Radec replied as flies seemed to originate from it and a smoke appeared along side the table. "I have yet to test what it does but in a state like yours I would advise not using more than one."

The book opened its small scraggly eyes. Completely dark, it seemed as if hundreds stared around the room.

---

"We were all like you..." Ren broke his silence. "You think we just enjoyed being monsters? I'll wait until you break too and when you finally understand I'll beat the crap out of you for not listening." Ren turned and poked at the fire.

Yousuke smiled. "As your friend says, I had people I cared about and lost them. I'm not the first or the last. What makes you any different?"

The man eyed the aged book warily, gazing back into its worn form. "What do you want me to do about your predicament. I honestly don't care at the moment. And as I am a very busy man I have better things to do."

--

Kenny stood at his full height, the fire creating a large shadow behind him. His eyes flickered between emotions, "The difference is that I haven't lost them." He grabbed the deserted bag, "You can make your own dinner." He spat kicking the cooking pan to the ground sizzling food hissing as it hit the damp earth. He followed after his friends.

"Well... Like you... We will both die from these books if we do not find the keys." Radec replied and pointed at the journal he ushered before the book of lust. "Without them it basically eats of your life and if you don't have the book you will most certainly die." Radec coughed.

---

"And he thinks he is so different... Does he think I didn't care about the girl who was eaten alive? Maybe about the kid I saw ripped in half by one of those 'cleaners' or maybe the person beaten to death by the army. I mean of course I didn't care about them and that is why they died. Of course this kid knows more about my life and thoughts than I do." Yousuke replied sarcastically and kicked the pan aside. "So blind people remain these days. If I have to prove a point I'll show you myself."

He moved over and began to release a small lizard onto the ground which began to eat insects off the floor.
